The Best Free AI Tools — and What the Free Plans Really Include

By the AI Atlas editorial team · Published October 30, 2026 · 5 min read

Almost every popular AI tool has some kind of free access, but "free" means very different things. Some free plans are genuinely useful every day. Others are a one-time handful of credits, or come with rules that stop you using the results for work.

This guide picks the most useful free option in each category and spells out what the free plan includes — and what it doesn't — so you know where you'll hit the wall.

Checked October 2026. Free plans change often, and vendors don't always announce it. Confirm the current limits on each tool's site before you rely on them.

AI assistants

General chat assistants are where most people start, and all the big ones have a free plan.

Writing

Grammarly has the most useful free plan for everyday writing: grammar, spelling and clarity suggestions in your browser and many apps. Its more advanced rewriting features are on the paid plan. For drafting whole articles, the free AI assistants above do more than any free writing tool — dedicated marketing writers like Jasper and Copy.ai have no free plan.

Images

Image generation has the most generous free options. Leonardo AI gives 150 tokens a day, Adobe Firefly offers free daily generations, and ChatGPT and Gemini both create images on their free plans. The usual catch: free images are often public, and commercial rights vary. Our step-by-step guide on how to generate images with AI for free covers each option in detail.

Video

This is the weakest category for free users, because video is expensive to generate. Runway gives 125 credits once — enough to try it, not to use it regularly. Pika's free plan has no monthly credits, and Synthesia's free plan is very limited. Treat free video plans as trials.

Audio and music

Automation and productivity

Zapier's free plan runs 100 tasks a month with two-step Zaps — enough for a couple of simple automations, like saving email attachments to a folder. Make includes 1,000 credits a month and its visual builder, which goes further if you don't mind a steeper learning curve.

Open-source and local AI

If you want AI that's free with no usage limits, run it yourself. Ollama and LM Studio are free apps that run open models like Llama and Mistral on your own computer — your prompts never leave the machine. The trade-off is that you need decent hardware, and small local models are less capable than the best cloud assistants. Our beginner's guide to running AI on your own computer shows how to start.

The catches with free AI plans

Before you build a habit around a free plan, keep these in mind:

When to upgrade

Pay when a free limit stops you every day, when you need commercial rights, or when the better model saves you real time. Most paid plans let you cancel monthly, so try one for a month on a real project before you commit. Every tool page on AI Atlas lists the current starting price, and you can browse all categories to compare.
